Another day, another Warrior adopted

Posted July 27th, 2009 by Ms Tracy

I am going to have to stop reading the profiles on AnySoldier.com; there’s always someone whose request catches my eye and tugs on my heart, and I’ve been trying really hard not to adopt any more until my current contacts have come home.  But, I get an e-mail stating that one of my Warriors has updated their profile, and I go to see what changed ~ and wind up clicking on another name, and another…etc.  I guess that’s why the phrase “AnySoldier Support Junkie” was coined, and it’s a very apt term.

So, yesterday I was checking on an update (good thing I did; the address had changed completely) and while I was on the site, I clicked on another name, just random choice. The contact had no requests for himself and his group (10 males, 4 females) except “prayers .”  I had to request the address; wouldn’t you have done the same thing, even if you did already have 71 contacts in your Troop Support Rolodex?

I put two cards in the mail to the group this morning, each one with 7 Guardian Angel cards enclosed so everyone can have their own angel to carry with them. One side of the card has “Your Own Personal Guardian Angel” with a picture of an angel on it, and the other side says “Don’t ever forget, you’re in our thoughts and prayers every day. Please come home safe!” I will continue to write letters and send cards until they come home, regardless of whether I ever hear back from any of the group or not. Once they’re in the Rolodex, they’re stuck with me for the duration…LOL!

I put together a package for Spc. Lizardo-Perez and his group, which I will get mailed off today. When I e-mailed him to see what they might like to get, his reply was “we will be happy with anything. It’s just nice to know that somebody cares and appreciates what we are doing.”  Therefore, I stuffed a large FRB with “anything.” Magazines, cookies, crackers, sunflower seeds, candy, Andy Kapp’s Hot Fries, Trail Mix Fruit & Nut Bars, a little bit of this, and a little bit of that. Oh, yeah, and 24 Guardian Angel cards and a letter.

I decided to go with three large FRB’s and leave $9 in the support checking account, so I’m going through my Rolodex to see whose turn it is to get a package.  I really need to get letters written to the rest.  As I’ve been going through the addresses, I’ve noticed several who are due home within the next month, which means it’s more than likely that their mail has already been cut off.  I’ll pull their cards and put them in the “home” Rolodex. It’s a much larger file than the “active” one.  Then, of course, I’ll rationalize to myself that it’s okay to adopt another one or two Warriors, since I just weeded out some that are coming home…There’s no cure for being a Support Junkie, which is fine, because I’m not looking for a cure.  (Sorry Jack…that’s just the way it is…LOL!)
